LED 101

Light Emitting Diodes are the future. We truly believe so. But without letting people know its benefits, this technology will take time before it catches our attention. We’re here to let you know everything there is to the technology.

This is the golden term used to measure the efficiency or in more technical terms, the ‘efficacy’ of the lighting system. Lumens is a measurement of the ‘quantity’ of light. We must be sure to understand that lumens is a measurement of light in absolute terms. This is important and will be explained further on. Wattage on the other hand is a measurement of power as well as the rate of energy consumed in an hour. A 16W light bulb would consume 16 watts in an hour, 24 watts in an hour and a half, 48 watts in 3 hours, etc. Thus, the term lumens per watt is simply an efficiency indicator where it states how many lumens the device could produce with one single watt of energy.

That was clear and simple. What’s even simpler are the plain facts we will show you. The table below represents the efficacies of different lighting technologies available:

Technology   Lumens per Watt
Incandescent   12
Halogen   18
Fluorescent Light Bulbs   55
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL)   70
Fluorescent Light Tubes (T8)   80
Fluorescent Light Tubes (T5)   95
